Move beyond self-doubt to achieve your goalsby Jean Shea Thursday, July 19, 2012
Maybe despite your success, you’ve reached a point where you are feeling some self-doubt and fear. It’s not surprising since going into business on your own takes a lot of risk. It’s natural from time to time to feel a lack of confidence about who you are and what you can do.
Still you can’t let your self-doubt hold you back. In fact, the best way to get over your doubt and fear is to own up to it and deal with it head on. If you face what concerns you – fear of making a mistake, fear of rejection or humiliation or fear of failure – you’ll find yourself liberated.
Consider these steps to help yourself get beyond your doubts and fear to get what the results you want for your business and yourself.
Get out of your comfort zone: Be willing to be uncomfortable for a while. You may need to talk to people you’ve never talked to before or do something you’ve never done before. Basically you need to be willing to live with some discomfort for the short term to achieve what you want for the long term,
Be decisive: Don’t hope for something; do something about it. Take action. Your inner doubt may be making you question yourself and get in the way of you taking decisive action. This is called self sabotage. Make a decision and commit to doing it, whatever it takes.
Change your associations: If someone in your life is contributing to your self-doubt, make a change. Connect with people personally and professionally who encourage you to take risks and can offer advice to get you on the right track.
Get positive inputs: Find sources of information – online, in business books, experts in your field – to gain more information on the areas that you are struggling with.
Change your self-talk: Change your perspective by the way you communicate with yourself. Is your glass half full or half empty? When your self-talk conveys optimism and confidence, you in turn change your behavior.
You may find that to get over your self-doubt, you need to take small steps instead of big leaps. That’s fine. Point yourself in the right direction, act now and keep moving forward. When you conquer your self-doubt your path to achieving your goals will be clear.
